Jan. 16, 2018: In the past two weeks, community members have responded very generously to the $36,000 Matching Challenge for the Princeton Community Housing Griggs Farm Fire Relief Fund – giving $28,210 or 78% of the target.  One week remains in the inspiring challenge kindly offered by anonymous donors!  Gifts online or postmarked by January 23 will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to a total of $36,000.  So far, 111 donors have responded, with caring gifts ranging from $25 to $5,000.  Most gifts have been in the $50-200 range.

These gifts will help the 34 residents displaced by the tragic December 27 fire at Griggs Farm.  They had been living in affordable housing apartments owned and managed by Princeton Community Housing (PCH), a 501(c)(3) non-profit founded in 1967.  While some displaced residents are staying temporarily with family or friends, PCH is voluntarily paying for the remaining majority to live temporarily at an extended stay hotel. 

Gifts to the Griggs Farm Fire Relief Fund increase PCH’s limited emergency resources, to enable PCH to lengthen the term of this emergency housing and provide other crucial needs for the displaced residents until each resident can secure longer-term temporary housing and bring stability to the household. 

The reconstruction of the damaged Griggs Farm building, which had 24 apartments, is now estimated to take at least ten months.  On behalf of the residents, PCH expresses gratitude for the outpouring of donations of warm clothing, food, toiletries, gift cards, and financial resources.

PCH is working with other community organizations and the Human Services Department of the municipality of Princeton to identify local places where the displaced residents can stay for an extended time, to keep children in the Princeton public school district and maintain employment and other community ties.  Individuals or organizational representatives with housing options are asked to contact PCH.  While PCH provides affordable homes to over 1,000 residents in Princeton, these homes are filled and wait lists are 12-24 months.  Therefore, other housing is needed for the displaced Griggs Farm residents during the building’s reconstruction.
